Cal Thompson, Artist, 1958 – 2016
It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Cal Thompson, visual artist and sculptor. Cal passed on July 19, 2016, of cardiac arrest. Cal lived with his partner and best friend, Christine Doctor in the quiet Town of Hillsdale, NY, where he lived a much quieter and simpler existence than his many years in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Southhampton.
In the late 70’s Cal left his family home in Briarcliff Manor, NY to work in the city that never sleeps as a print maker – pre computer takeover. Following the slowdown of printmaking, Cal became a very cutting edge and prolific sculptor. His creations were featured in Vogue magazine, and several Japanese and German publications and collected by many famous people including Tom Hanks and Susan Sarandon.
During this time, he worked in a variety of jobs for Top Notch Productions who supplied needed help to the television industry, including MTV, Animal Planet and news stations. Whenever MTV needed a special prop, they called call for a commission. Julian’s Auction recently featured a Cal creation, a 4 X 8 desk that was formerly commissioned by MTV for their studio reception area.
In the last 5 years Cal turned his artistic focus to Video art and video production In 2012 Cal was thrilled to be asked to participate in the Whitney Biennial with Michael Clark.
Cal is survived by his partner of 11 years, Christine Doctor of Glenwood Landing, Southhampton and now, Hillsdale, NY . He is also survived his 12 year old son, Julian Thompson of Breman, Germany; his father Bill Thompson of Manhattan, NY and a brother, Andrew Thompson and a sister Nicole Thompson both of New York.
